Cornhill Squash Summer League 2023

Dear All

Do you like the Club's new logo above? You'll see this on all future communications and on our website and Facebook page.

35 members have entered the Summer League for 2023, including 14 relatively new members who have not previously played in this competition. This is a record for the Cornhill Summer League, so thank you all for your entry submissions.

This Summer League will be run on a Round-Robin basis over the 20 weeks from Monday 8th May to Sunday 24th September inclusive. If any other members wish to join this competition after the 8th May, we can accommodate this.

All players are in the same league and division, therefore there are 34 games that are possible to be played by each entrant, although you can decide how many or how few games you wish to play and this number might be determined by work commitments, holidays, ill-health or other factors. In previous years, the Summer League has been run across two periods of 10 weeks each but, given the high numbers this year, the league will operate for one single 20-week period. This should give everyone a real chance to play lots of members that they don't normally see in the Winter League.

An individual handicap is allocated to each player at the start of this competition. Each player will retain their handicap throughout the 2023 Summer League. The handicaps are shown below and will also will be displayed on the Club noticeboard.

The Summer League Champion is the player that accumulates the most points over the 20 weeks of the Summer League, commencing on 8th May and finishing on 24th September 2023.

Summer League Rules

The Cornhill Summer League is played under American Rules:

First to 21 in each set
At 20-20, keep going until either player is 2 points clear
Handicaps apply to each set. Start each set from your handicap score.

All games, best of five sets: 3 - 0, 3 - 1 or 3 - 2, and each player scores one point for playing, therefore scores will count as 4-1, 4-2 or 4-3. There can also be drawn games if the number of completed sets is level after 40 minutes.

Single yellow spot balls only for league games.

Cancellations, no shows and late shows will be handled as follows: -

  • If a player cancels the game less than one hour before the start time, then the opponent may claim a walkover (3-0)
  • If a player arrives on court up to 10 minutes after the court commencement time, the other player can claim the first set
  • If a player arrives on court between 10 and 20 minutes after the court commencement time, the other player can claim the first and second sets
  • If a player arrives on court over 20 minutes after the court commencement time, the other player can claim a walkover (3-0)

The Fixtures Secretary has the final say on any disputes!

Historically, this has been one of Cornhill's most enjoyable and closely-fought competitions. Please try your best to play as many games as you can - the handicaps should even things up a little, resulting in some very close matches.

If you are not yet included in the Cornhill WhatsApp group, you might want to be added as this is probably the easiest route to organising your games, particularly with so many players involved. Please let me know if you want to be in this group.

The Summer League will open on MyCourts early on Monday morning, 8th May, but you can start to book your matches from today onwards - try to fill your diaries!

Whatever you do over the next 20 weeks, enjoy it and see how many points you can get on the board!
