Cornhill Squash and Racketball Competition Dates 2023-24

To All Cornhill Squash Club Members

Please see below all the Cornhill Competitions available to all Club members from 1st October 2023 for the coming season.

Many of these competitions are played on a handicap basis to try to even up the matches where we have very experienced players against relative novices. This principle has been applied for many years but, for the coming season, we are going to introduce a panel to assess the handicaps, rather than just one person (me!) being involved to date - might be more accurate!

The prestigious Squash Winter League and Racketball League are not played with handicaps, to allow the cream to rightly rise to the top. As usual, the starting point for these two competitions will be that entrants will drop into the various divisions based on their cumulative finishing point in the previous season (for example, the top 6 or 7 will form Div 1, the next 6 or 7 will form Div 2 and so on). All new members playing in these leagues for the first time will automatically start in the bottom division and work their way through, via promotion and relegation, to find their optimum position.

I acknowledge that the Membership Renewal Form (due to be returned on 24th or 26th September) requests that you tick the boxes if you want to play in the early competitions (Squash Winter League, starting on 2nd October, and the Squash Knockout Trophy, starting on 6th November) - I am happy if you also wish to respond to this communication with your entry requests for these two squash competitions and also the Racketball League and the Racketball Knockout Trophy (The Frederick Wright Cup), both due to start on 1st October.

However you decide to enter these 4 competitions (Renewal Form and/or responding to this communication), I must have your entries by close on Tuesday 26th September. I will be at the Club for both of the Renewal/Key Change Dates on Sunday 24th September (9am-12 noon) and Tuesday 26th September (6pm-8pm) if you have any questions.

If you wish to join either of the two leagues later in the season, we can accommodate that but you will start in the bottom division of either squash or racketball. Obviously, it is not possible to be involved in any of these competitions in 2023-24 if you haven't renewed your membership at the appropriate time.

Hopefully, this all makes sense but you know where I am if not.

Have great 2023-24 season at Cornhill, whether playing competitively or socially - squash and racketball remain at the top of the list for all sports worldwide to build and maintain your fitness levels and to spend 40 minutes charging around the court, thinking about nothing other than that pesky black ball!

Best Wishes

John Carrington
