Squash Winter League Results and Other Info

Dear All

A highly competitive period 2 of the 2023-24 Cornhill Winter League finished this evening with 41 members being actively involved over the past five weeks.

Congratulations to the following 6 players for winning their respective divisions:

Div 1 - Iain Massey

Div 2 - Malcolm Alphonso

Div 3 - John Carrington

Div 4 - Steve Scott

Div 5 - David Robinson

Div 6 - David Millard

Impressively, these six players won a total of 34 matches between them and lost none. A new ball awaits each of you next time our paths cross. The up-to-date Winter League positions are shown in full below - please note that the Committee has agreed an amendment to the scoring system that will apply retrospectively to the whole of the 2023-24 Winter League competition, as follows:

  • All points scored in div 1 will be multiplied by 3 (as now)
  • All points scored in div 2 will be multiplied by 2.5 (instead of 2)
  • All points scored in div 3 will be multiplied by 2 (instead of no multiplier)
  • All points scored in div 4 will be multiplied by 1.5 (instead of no multiplier)
  • All points scored in any other division will have no multiplier (as now)

For Period 3 of the Winter League, we have 42 players involved, therefore six divisions of seven players, including two additional entrants - Peter Tytherleigh (Alan's brother) is a new member and Simon Wallis returns to the competition after taking some time out to complete a marathon in the truly fantastic time of 3 hours 9 minutes and 20 seconds! We temporarily lose Alan Butler, David Cosby, John Baldock and Richard Jones for a mixture of injury and work-related challenges.

This third period starts on Monday 11th December and ends on Sunday 14th January, but please don't forget that the squash court is closed completely for major maintenance works for six days between Tuesday 2nd January and Sunday 7th January, reopening on Monday 8th January . Therefore, you need to get booking your matches ASAP and don't be tempted by frivolous activities such as Xmas shopping or eating copious amounts of food.

In addition to the Squash Winter League, there remain 10 x 1st round Squash Challenge Cup matches and 4 x Last 16 Racketball Trophy matches to be completed by the 31st December. If you are unable to play these cup matches by the end of this month, you need to hand your opponent a bye and advise both your opponent and John Carrington of this position. If any matches remain unplayed by 1st January and byes haven't been offered, lots will be drawn to decide which players progress to the next round.

Finally, The Cornhill Squash Club Committee wishes all our members and your families and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Peaceful and Prosperous New Year - just remember that the squash court is a great sanctuary throughout the festive season and there will be host of members just waiting for you to suggest you escape for an hour to beat the living daylights out of that small rubber ball!

Happy Christmas!

The Cornhill Squash Club Committee
