Squash Winter League 3rd Period Results and 4th Period Info

Dear All

Considering that we had the Festive Season and the court closure for a week, Period 3 of the Squash Winter League was both very well supported and very competitive across most of the six divisions.

In total, 90 League matches were played, which represents 71% of the total available. These are great numbers.

Congratulations to the following six players who won their respective divisions and who win a squash ball for their efforts:

Div 1 - Jamie Johnstone

Div 2 - Terry Cattle

Div 3 - Steve Scott

Div 4 - Matt Pyne

Div 5 - David Millard

Div 6 - Harry Brown

All the Winter League positions at the half way stage of this competition are shown in the table below.

Just to remind you all that the Winter League Champion is the player who accumulates the highest number of points (using the multiplier system as per the note in the table below) over the course of the entire season of 6 periods. Also remember that your starting point for the 2024-25 Winter League is determined by where you finish in the cumulative points table for the current season - for example, the top seven will form Div 1, players 8-14 will form Div 2 and so on. This assumes there remain seven players in each division, but this could change if the membership grows or declines in number.

The above narrative therefore highlights the point that every set that you win over the course of the season will count towards your cumulative score, so losing 3-2 is better than losing 3-0!

For the 4th period of the Winter League, we lose Miles Wallis due to injury and Scott Cullen due to marathon training. However, Alan Butler returns after injury. David Cosby and John Baldock remain on the sidelines due to injury and work commitments respectively. There are 41 players across the 6 divisions.

Whilst on the subject of the Squash Winter League, the Committee is aware of a few concerns from members regarding the return of players post-injury/illness/other commitments and where they should fit back into the Winter League on their return. This has been amplified recently with us having 6 divisions as a result of a healthy number of new members. Please be advised that this topic will be a feature of the Club AGM in May 2024 when the current rules will be subject to review. The Committee has decided not to amend the current "return to play" rules mid-season as this may prove disruptive.

Please feel free to comment on any subject or rule pertaining to the Club or its competitions at any point. We welcome input from the Club membership at any time. Please just send a message to any member of the Committee (details on the notice at the Club).

Finally, for those of you still involved in the Squash Challenge Cup, don't forget that the 2nd round (last 32) must be completed by close on 31st January. The draw for the Plate Competition, involving the Challenge Cup 1st and 2nd round losers, will be made in early February.
