Cornhill Squash Club Finals Results

Dear All

Thank you to the six finalists who were involved and to those of you who came along to watch the three hugely entertaining cup finals at the Squash Club yesterday evening, prior to the 2024 AGM.

First up was the inaugural running of the Frederick Wright Racketball Handicap Trophy. For those of you who may not be aware, Frederick Wright was the 23-year old Racquet Court Attendant on the RMS Titanic when the ship sank on the 15th April 1912. Frederick was born in Great Billing in Northamptonshire, so a local man. On the morning of the Titanic sinking, Frederick was due to provide some coaching on court but this never happened. He died in the North Atlantic later that day.

The Racketball Trophy was an epic match, played between two of the top players in our club - Chris Ridgway , the Cornhill Squash Club Chair and Trustee, playing off a handicap of zero, and David Millard , the Cornhill Squash Club Secretary, playing off a handicap of minus 8.

Chris and David were on court for an extraordinary 90 minutes, with Chris finally coming out on top by 3 sets to 2 to become the first winner of this new trophy. The five sets, played to 21 points or by 2 clear points beyond 21, were scored as follows (Chris's score first):

25 - 23, 10 - 21, 21 - 11, 16 - 21, 21 - 15

Next up was the 6th running of the Cornhill Squash Plate Competition, played between Malcolm Alphonso , Cornhill Squash Club Committee Member and our other Trustee (alongside Chris Ridgway), and Simon Langley , also a Committee Member - later in the evening at the AGM Simon was to receive an Honorary Membership from the Club in recognition of him having played at Cornhill for 50 years and been a member of the Club Committee for 40 years; a remarkable achievement by a true stalwart of our Club.

Another extraordinarily competitive match was played by Malcolm, playing off a handicap of 5 and Simon playing off 10, with Malcolm just edging it in the 5th set, having come from two sets down, by 3 sets to 2. Again, the five sets were played to 21 points or by 2 clear points beyond 21, and were scored as follows (Malcolm's score first):

17 - 21, 20 - 22, 21 - 17, 22 - 20, 21 - 19

The third cup final was for the Cornhill Squash Challenge Cup, the oldest of the Club's handicap competitions. This year, the final was played between two of our more recent members, Dave Robinson , playing off a handicap of 11, and Laurence "Loz" Foster , playing off 5.

The match was played with real skill and power by both Dave and Loz, with Dave coming out on top by 3 sets to 1, probably assisted by a slightly helpful handicap in his first season at Cornhill! As per the previous two matches, the five sets were played to 21 points or by 2 clear points beyond 21, and were scored as follows (Dave's score first):

21 - 8, 19 - 21, 21 - 10, 21 - 18

Thanks again to the six finalists for providing such great entertainment and to all the members who participated during the 2023-24 season. We will run the same three competitions again next season.

Enjoy your squash and racketball.

Regards

John Carrington

Fixtures Secretary on behalf of the Cornhill Squash Club Committee
