Cornhill Squash Club Fees Proposal - Please Read

To All Members of the Cornhill Squash Club

Throughout the many years that squash has been played at the Cornhill Squash Club, the finances have been tightly managed and continue to feature as a major agenda point at all the regular Committee Meetings. The Committee closely monitors the income and expenditure with the aim of continuing to provide the membership with low-cost squash in a good quality, friendly environment. Recent comparisons have shown Cornhill to be very competitively priced against all the other squash clubs in Northamptonshire and surrounding counties.

However, you will be aware of the current and impending general increases in energy costs, including electricity, gas and oil. The Cornhill Squash Club does not consume any gas or oil, but does rely upon electricity for lighting, heating and hot water.

The Club only holds minimal cash reserves and therefore, unfortunately, the rise in electricity costs can only be addressed by an increase in the prices for playing squash.

The Committee last met on the 9th March 2022 and agreed some proposals to be set before the membership at the Cornhill Squash Club’s Annual General Meeting to be held at the Club, starting at 7pm on Wednesday 18th May 2022. These proposals are as follows:

  1. From 1st June 2022, to remove the court light meter and replace it with a ‘free to operate’ court light switch that will be timed to provide exactly 40 minutes of light onto the court. From this point onwards, the court booking fees on MyCourts to increase to £6 (£3 per player) from the current £2 for 40 minutes’ play and there will be no separate fee for the lights. This revised booking fee will apply to all games 52 weeks of the year.

  1. From the next Cornhill Squash Club membership renewal date in September 2022, annual subscriptions to change as follows:

Full member £70 (currently £60)

First year membership £60 (currently £50)

Students £35 (currently £10)

Given the information from the energy sector that we have to date, the Committee is of the view that these proposed changes to the court booking fee and the annual subscription are sufficient to see the Club through the remainder of the 2021/22 season and the whole of the 2022/23 season. However, the Committee does reserve the right to review all prices should operating costs increase further during this difficult economic period.

As members of the Club, we encourage you to attend the forthcoming AGM to discuss and vote on these proposals. The vote will only be in person on this evening (ie no proxies or remote voting).

Your understanding of this difficult situation is appreciated. We are obviously extremely keen to retain the Club’s current membership and increase these numbers as we have done over recent months. Behind the scenes, the Committee continues to explore local opportunities to relocate the Club, but, in the meantime, we must maintain what we have at Cornhill.

Regards

The Cornhill Squash Club Committee
