Squash Summer League and WhatsApp Group Reminders

Dear All

Two quick reminders for the 2022 Summer League and the Cornhill Social WhatsApp Group for arranging friendly games. Please also look for regular updates from the Cornhill Squash Club on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/Cornhill-Squash-Club-785240131492665

Summer League 2022

To date, we have 17 entrants for this competition, a good start but plenty of room for other members to get involved.

The Summer League will commence on Monday 9th May 2022.

There will be two periods of 10 weeks each. The first will run from 9th May to 17th July and the second will run from 18th July to 25th September.

During each of the two periods, all entrants will play in a Round Robin format, where the aim is to play as many of your opponents as possible. All entrants will play off an individual handicap (TBC once entries confirmed) and the ultimate winner of the Summer League Trophy will be the player who accumulates the most points over the 20 weeks.

It is not mandatory (or expected) that all entrants will play 100% of their available matches, but please only enter if you are actually going to play some of the games - this avoids frustration with other players.

IF YOU WISH TO ENTER THE SUMMER LEAGUE, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL MESSAGE BY CLOSE ON MONDAY 2nd MAY AT THE LATEST.

If you do not wish to enter, it would also be helpful if you could reply to this message, just to confirm that you do not wish to play in the Summer League. This just assists with the check that the message is reaching the full membership.

WhatsApp Social Group

The Squash Club Committee is keen to increase the number of games being played at Cornhill and to offer all members the opportunity to play friendly or social games with other members, either in addition to any of the formal league and cup competitions that are organised at the Club or just to enable members who don’t want to play in these competitions the opportunity to play a wider range of members on a social basis.

The plan is to set up a “Cornhill Social” WhatsApp group that would be available to all Club members who were keen to play social games on an ad hoc basis, as many or as few as would suit each member. This is a great way for new members to to get involved and to play a wide range of members, from beginners to vastly experienced players.

In principle, the WhatsApp group would operate as follows:

  1. Members wishing to be included in the group would respond directly to this message to confirm their interest and confirm the mobile telephone number they wish to be used in the WhatsApp group.
  2. Members of the group can be added or deleted at any time, with 24 hours’ notice, by texting 07598 404958.
  3. Members who leave the Cornhill Squash Club or don’t renew their annual membership will be automatically deleted from the WhatsApp Group.
  4. To arrange a social game, the member would send a WhatsApp to the group using wording such as:
  • (For Example) I have booked the squash court for a social game on Thursday 21st April at 5.30pm – could anyone play me?
  • (For Example) I am keen to play a social game during the evening on Thursday 21st April – would anyone be interested?
  • (For Example) I am keen to play a social game week commencing 25th April – would anyone be interested?
  1. The initial response from any interested members should be back to the entire WhatsApp Group to demonstrate to the group that there is interest to this initial WhatsApp enquiry, but after that exchange all the finer booking details should be sorted out by the two members outside of the WhatsApp group – this will hopefully avoid multiple messages that are of no interest to the rest of the group.
  2. All social game court bookings will follow the usual format, using MyCourts, with the costs being split 50/50 between the two players.
  3. It is obviously expected that all members who commit to playing these social games actually turn up to play on the agreed day.

If any members of the WhatsApp group are concerned about the squash abilities of their potential opponents (ie members they haven't played previously), it may be useful to exchange basic information such as “beginner”, “average” or “pretty good” – or something similar to suit your capabilities! In any event, this shouldn't dissuade anyone from playing against someone new - that is one of the prime objectives of this initiative.

The WhatsApp group will operate 52 weeks of the year.

For obvious reasons, this WhatsApp group should not be used to exchange jokes, videos or any inappropriate material. It is being set up for squash purposes only.

Therefore, if you are interested in joining up, please reply to this note by the 9th May , after which the initial group will be set up.

Please try to get involved in one or both of these initiatives - after all, it is your club!

Regards

The Cornhill Squash Club Committee
