Final Call for the Cornhill Squash Winter League and KO Competitions

To All Cornhill Squash Club Members, Season 2022-23

Today (29th September) is closure date for entries into the first period of the 2022-23 Winter League, starting on Monday 3rd October. Any entries received after today will drop into the second period that will start on Monday 7th November.

As at this morning, we have 30 entrants (guys and gals) for the first period, with a 31st person committed to the league from the 3rd period in December. We also have 31 entries for the Knockout Competitions that will start in mid-November.

As things stand, there will be five divisions in the Winter League, with six players in each. This may change slightly if any more enties are received today - please respond to this note today if you want to be added to the October league. The divisions will be shown on MyCourts on Saturday morning, 1st October, at which time you can start to book your first games.

The image below is a schedule that shows all of the key dates for the Club competitions during the coming season. This is also displayed on the Club noticeboard. Please also read carefully the various rules for the Winter League:

Scoring Rules From October 2022

  • Each match is the best of five sets
  • Match scores can be 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2
  • Each player is also awarded one point for playing the match, therefore the final scores for entering into MyCourts will be 4-1, 4-2 or 4-3
  • The matches will be played to the PAR 15 standard, therefore each set will be played to 15 points, with points being won on either serve or return.
  • If the score reaches 14-14, the set will continue until one player is two points clear. There is no maximum number of points in this respect.
  • If a match cannot be completed within the designated 40 minutes, the players can agree to either record the score as at the end of 40 minutes or agree to play the remaining set(s) on another occasion but still within the same 5 week period. If the players cannot agree, the default position is to record the score as at the end of the 40 minutes.

Promotion and Relegation

  • The top two players from each division will be promoted at the end of each five week period.
  • The bottom two players from each division will be relegated at the end of each five week period.
  • Any players who are injured or ill for the five week period and cannot fulfil any of their fixtures will be relegated.

Cancellations, No-Shows or Late Shows

  • If a player cancels a game less than an hour before the designated start time, his/her opponent will be awarded a walkover with a score of 3-0 to be entered on MyCourts
  • If a player arrives up to 10 minutes late for a match, his/her opponent will be awarded the first set.
  • If a player arrives between 11 and 20 minutes late for a match, his/her opponent will be awarded the first two sets.
  • If a player arrives over 20 minutes late for a match, his/her opponent will be awarded a walkover, with a score of 3-0 to be recorded on MyCourts.

Injury or Illness

  • If any player is injured or ill during the 5 week session, all scores for matches played previously in the same session by that player and his/her opponents will be retained.
  • It is the responsibility of the injured or ill player to maintain contact with all other players in their division, with regular updates on their likely return to play.

Ball Specification

All league matches must be played with a single yellow spot ball.

Winter League Period

There will be six periods of five weeks, starting in October, during the Winter League season.

The Fixtures Secretary's decision will be final following appropriate discussions as necessary with other Committee members.

The booking of the league matches should be shared evenly across each division, so please make contact with your divisional opponents ASAP once the details appear on Saturday. 95% of all league players are now included in the Cornhill Social WhatsApp Group, so it couldn't be easier, accepting that 10 of the 30 players who have entered so far have not previously played in the Cornhill Winter League.

Finally, there are a couple of entrants who have not yet paid their subs or exchanged their front door keys - you need to do this in the next day or so or you will not be able to access the Club!

Any issues, please just send me a message - WhatsApp or Text on 07598 404958 or email on

Have a great season!
